Everyone has their own cleaning routine without realizing there’s a better way to do it. There are right and wrong ways to dust, mop or vacuum. We list the most common cleaning mistakes and how to fix them.

If you have wood floor you shouldn’t clean them with water, although it’s tempting. Water on hardwood and laminate floors could be harmful. Sweep and vacuum regularly using the proper attachments, then mop with a barely damp cloth.

Although furniture polish smells nice and makes your furniture look shiny it should be used sparingly because most have a large percentage of oil in it. It can smear your furniture and make fingerprints more prominent. Use a barely damp cloth to dust.

Scrubbing stains

When you have a stain on your carpet or upholstery don’t scrub the stain out because it will damage the pile. Using a kitchen towel blot as much of the spill up as you can. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water and blot again and repeat to clean the stain. Apply carpet stain remover if the stain is still there and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Window cleaning

It may seem like a good idea to clean your windows when the sun is out but the opposite is true. Sun will evaporate the glass cleaner quickly and cause streaking. The best time to wash windows is on a cloudy day.

Mixing cleaning products

Never mix cleaning products, especially an ammonia based and a bleach based. Ammonia and bleach vapors, when mixed together, form a toxic gas that’s extremely dangerous.

Using abrasives to clean bath tub

Using a scrubbing sponge to clean tiles and bath tubs will remove stubborn dirt but dull the finish. Use a soft cloth and a non-abrasive liquid cleanser or powder.
